While populations in the rest of the world are falling or about to fall, Africa is growing demographically. By 2100, 38% of the world’s population is projected to be in Africa. There are therefore few more important challenges facing humanity than ensuring that African economic growth exceeds African population growth in the coming decades. Of all the world’s regions, sub-Saharan Africa has long been the laggard. Attempts to improve African living standards with aid programs had very disappointing results. Experiments with socialism nearly all had adverse outcomes. Even governments committed to market economics have rarely made a success of borrowing abroad to invest in Africa. As a result, in terms of per capita GDP sub-Saharan is even further behind today than it was in 1990. A new model therefore needs to be adopted — one that harnesses the power of entrepreneurship, local knowledge, and social networks. That is what TAF is all about. Our vision is a new approach to African development that harnesses the power of modern technology to promote grassroots innovation, instead of top-down development. I have never doubted that Africa has both talented entrepreneurs and people eager to work and to learn. Only now, however, do we have a model that can allocate capital intelligently not only to the places it is needed but also to the companies that are likely to generate decent returns. That is my vision of TAF.
